Manitoba declares state of emergency as wildfires drive over 17,000 from homes

Military aircraft alongside ground crews are supporting firefighting operations as 22 active blazes scorch almost 200,000 hectares

Overview

  • Premier Wab Kinew issued a provincewide emergency declaration on May 28 in response to escalating wildfires.
  • More than 17,000 residents, including the entire city of Flin Flon and several First Nations communities, have been displaced.
  • Canadian Armed Forces personnel have been deployed with aircraft and equipment to aid evacuations and bolster firefighting efforts.
  • At least 22 wildfires are active across Manitoba, with 11 reported as out of control amid prolonged hot, dry conditions.
