Manipur Police Step Up Operations After Large Cache Seized

The state is mounting sustained searches to recover the remaining looted weapons and to deter armed civilian patrols that threaten law and order.

Overview

  • DGP Mukesh Singh, speaking on Sunday, warned that anyone who takes the law into their own hands or fires on security forces will be arrested or met with self-defence fire and that proactive operations will continue until normalcy returns.
  • Security forces arrested six people in multi-district raids and recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition and explosives in operations reported over the weekend.
  • Police said the cache seized from Mayai Leikai in Thoubal included pistols, two SBBL shotguns, dozens of live rounds, detonators, KCP stickers, bulletproof plates and combat clothing, and the items have been handed to local police for investigation.
  • Separate anti-narcotics actions led to the arrest of two alleged drug peddlers and the seizure of methamphetamine tablets and heroin, as police press counter-crime work alongside arms recovery.
  • Authorities have set up 116 checkpoints across valley and hill districts, are providing escorted convoys on NH-37, and say about 70% of the weapons looted in May 2023 have been recovered while social-media monitoring aims to curb misinformation that could inflame tensions.
