Manipur Naga Council Enforces Indefinite Trade Embargo Over India–Myanmar Border Fencing

The government cites border security following the end of the Free Movement Regime.

Overview

  • The embargo took effect at midnight on September 8 across Naga-inhabited areas and remains open-ended.
  • The UNC frames it as the opening phase of a non-cooperation campaign to oppose border fencing and the abrogation of the Free Movement Regime.
  • Demonstrations and blockades disrupted NH-2 and NH-37, with goods trucks stranded in Senapati, Tamenglong and other districts.
  • Talks on August 26 between an 11-member Naga delegation and Home Ministry officials were inconclusive on reinstating FMR or stopping fencing.
  • The Centre is proceeding with a 1,643 km mix of physical and smart fencing on the Myanmar frontier, while groups such as the Zeliangrong United Front publicly reject the blockade.
