Manipur Forces Raze 527 Acres of Illegal Poppy in Weeklong Drive

Officials say the joint, intelligence-led campaign aims to choke narco-financing of insurgency.

Overview

  • Security teams destroyed an additional 41 acres of poppy in Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi on Monday, taking the total cleared since November 11 to 527 acres across four districts.
  • Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, CRPF and Forest officials conducted coordinated operations in difficult terrain guided by specific intelligence.
  • Earlier actions razed about 436 acres in Ukhrul’s Somdal, Lamlai Chingfei and Litan areas, plus roughly 20 acres each at Loibol Khullen and Kotlen in Kangpokpi.
  • Forces burned dozens of makeshift huts and destroyed or seized fertilisers, salt, herbicides, spray pumps, pipes and a temporary irrigation setup found at cultivation sites.
  • Officials estimate the destroyed acreage could have yielded over 3,583 kg of opium worth several crores, and they signalled continued crackdowns as separate operations netted four arrested militants in Imphal West.
