Manipur Forces Raze 476 Acres of Illegal Poppy in Five-Day Push

Officials say the intensified anti-poppy campaign targets opium-linked financing of unrest, with further raids planned.

Overview

  • From November 11 to 15, joint teams cleared 476 acres of illicit poppy across Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, according to official statements.
  • Assam Rifles, CRPF, Manipur Police and forest officials led coordinated drives in identified hill ranges after intelligence-led searches.
  • On November 15 in Kangpokpi, about 20 acres were destroyed at Loibol Khullen and another 20 acres at Kotlen, with makeshift huts burned and fertiliser, herbicide and salt seized and destroyed.
  • In Ukhrul, security forces reported razing 436 acres in the Somdal, Lamlai Chingfei and Litan hill ranges during November 11–15, and burning 51 huts at the sites.
  • A defence spokesman said a 25-acre plot in Kangpokpi could have yielded over 170 kg of opium worth multiple crores, and officials signalled more crackdowns in the coming days.
