Manipur Forces Raze 476 Acres of Illegal Poppy in Coordinated Five-Day Crackdown

Officials describe a renewed drive to choke narcotics funding networks.

Overview

  • Joint teams of Manipur Police, Assam Rifles and CRPF destroyed poppy crops over 476 acres across Kangpokpi and Ukhrul between November 11 and 15.
  • Ukhrul accounted for about 436 acres cleared in the Somdal, Lamlai Chingfei and Litan hill ranges, with 51 makeshift huts burned, according to police.
  • In Kangpokpi on November 15, operations at Loibol Khullen and Kotlen cleared roughly 40 acres, burned five huts and seized salts, fertilisers, herbicides, spray pumps and pipes found at the sites.
  • Assam Rifles said the Loibol Khullen plot of about 25 acres alone could have yielded over 170 kg of opium worth multiple crores, calling the raid a blow to drug networks.
  • Authorities cast the actions as part of an intensified War against drugs, citing a decline in identified poppy acreage since 2020 and signaling more eradication drives.
