Manhunt Continues for Suspect in Maine's Deadliest Shooting, Leaving 18 Dead

Search intensifies around Androscoggin River after suspect's vehicle found; political debate over state's "yellow flag" gun laws reignites.

  • A manhunt is underway for suspect Robert R. Card, a 40-year-old sergeant first class in the Army Reserve, following a shooting in Maine that killed 18 people and injured 13 others. Authorities are focusing their search around the Androscoggin River where the suspect's vehicle was found.
  • Card is believed to have opened fire at Just-In-Time Recreation, a bowling alley, and Schemengees Bar & Grille, in Lewiston, Maine. Officials named him as a person of interest, stating that he should be considered 'armed and dangerous'.
  • Of the victims, seven were killed at the bowling alley, eight at the bar, and three at the hospital. Many victims were part of the deaf community, were participating in a cornhole tournament at the time, and some were reportedly trying to protect others during the shooting.
  • This event has reignited the debate over Maine's 'yellow flag' gun laws, which require mental health professionals to deem a person a threat before police can request a judicial hearing to seize firearms. Senator Susan Collins and Representative Jared Golden have voiced their opinions on modifying gun laws, with Golden reversing his long-held stance against an assault weapons ban.
  • Despite over 530 tips and leads coming in, as of Friday, Card remains on the loose. Shelter-in-place orders remained in effect for Lewiston and nearby communities. Police refuse to comment on potential previous warnings about Card and whether these should have initiated yellow flag gun laws.
