Overview
- Three elderly people were critically injured in a targeted assault at a Cowies Road home in Tyers about 12:30pm on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
- All three victims were airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and remain in critical condition.
- Police say the suspect is a man in his 50s known to the victims who fled on foot wearing a black and mustard-coloured jacket and carrying a black backpack and may be armed with an axe and a handsaw.
- A large-scale search had entered its 21st hour by the evening as officers urged anyone who sees the man not to approach him and to call triple-0 or contact Crime Stoppers with CCTV or dashcam footage.
- The attack has heightened fear in the small Gippsland community and police say they will keep reviewing local CCTV and witness reports as the investigation and hunt continue.
