Manhattan Borough President Urges NYC to Pull Newsmax From Taxi TVs

City regulators say current TaxiTV programming complies with rules, with riders able to mute or turn off the screens.

Overview

  • Brad Hoylman-Sigal asked Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Taxi and Limousine Commission to suspend the city’s partnership with Curb and remove Newsmax from in-cab screens.
  • In a Jan. 21 letter, he urged making Curb’s licensure contingent on ending its Newsmax collaboration, citing a history of what he called misinformation.
  • The TLC said it regularly reviews TaxiTV content, that current Newsmax ads do not violate its standards, and that passengers can mute or shut off the screens.
  • Curb stated that only standard news segments from Newsmax have aired with no opinion or editorial content, and that all programming is reviewed for compliance.
  • Newsmax labeled the removal push a “pure act of censorship,” and no suspension or licensing action by the city has been announced; its deal with Curb provides brief updates to more than 15,000 taxis nationwide.
