Manfred: Rays’ New Owners Expected to Restart Tampa Bay Ballpark Search

The commissioner cast the pending $1.7 billion sale as a clean slate that will reset where the franchise pursues a long-term ballpark.

Overview

  • MLB’s ownership committee is reviewing a roughly $1.7 billion sale to a Patrick Zalupski–led group, with reports indicating a submission to owners for final approval later this month.
  • Rob Manfred said a completed sale would trigger a fresh evaluation of sites across the Tampa–St. Petersburg region to determine the best location for long-term viability.
  • The Rays are playing 2025 home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field because Tropicana Field’s roof was damaged by Hurricane Milton, and Manfred expects a return to the Trop next season.
  • Under Stu Sternberg, the team pursued but abandoned proposed ballparks at Al Lang (2007), Ybor City (2018) and downtown St. Petersburg (2023), then withdrew from a $1.3 billion plan in March.
  • A separate Orlando push lost two investors this month, making a 100-mile relocation less likely as the prospective buyers emphasize Tampa Bay ties.
