Manchester Synagogue Terror Attack Leaves Two Dead as Police Identify Suspect

Counter-terrorism police now lead the case, with patrols increased at Jewish sites nationwide.

Overview

  • Police named the suspect as Jihad Al‑Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent, who was shot by firearms officers within seven minutes of the first 999 call after a vehicle-and-knife assault outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall.
  • The two people killed were identified as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, and three others remain in serious condition.
  • The attack occurred during Yom Kippur, and security staff and worshippers prevented the assailant from entering the synagogue as police invoked Operation Plato.
  • A vest worn by the attacker gave the appearance of an explosive device but was assessed as not viable after bomb-disposal teams secured the scene.
  • The Metropolitan Police Counter-Terrorism Command has taken over the investigation, three people have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses, and national leaders condemned the violence as inquiries into motive continue.
