Manchester and Oxford Half Marathons Draw Huge Fields as Mens Record Falls in Manchester

Both city races doubled as major charity fundraisers with extensive road closures to manage the crowds.

  • The Manchester Half Marathon concluded on a 13.1-mile course starting and finishing at Old Trafford, with wave starts from 08:55 to 10:48 and a route through Chorlton, Sale, Hulme and Whalley Range.
  • A new mens course record of 1:02:02 was set in Manchester, with Jonny Mellor finishing second, Omar Ahmed third and Sean Frame winning the elite wheelchair race.
  • Local coverage reported a record turnout in Manchester, and the event is expected to raise about a31.5m for charities including Alzheimers Society, Cancer Research UK and The Christie.
  • Oxford staged its largest half marathon to date with more than 13,000 entrants, raising over a31.2m and drawing an estimated 20,000 spectators along the route.
  • Oxford winners were George Grassly in 1:05:31, Charlie Arnell as fastest woman in 1:15:01 and Gary Cooper taking the wheelchair title in 1:10:12.
