Overview
- Officers were called to the Chequers pub in Wootton at about 10:15am on Friday over concerns for a man's welfare.
- A fire broke out shortly after emergency services arrived, prompting a large response from firefighters.
- Police said the man was reported to have a crossbow, so specialist officers and negotiators were deployed and nearby homes were evacuated.
- At around 12:45pm the man exited the building, sustained self-inflicted injuries, was taken to hospital, and died on Sunday after his next of kin were informed.
- Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the incident, which Bedfordshire Police have referred to the IOPC in line with standard protocol.
