Man shot at New Mexico protest against controversial conquistador statue

A man was shot and injured at a protest against installing a statue of Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate in Española, New Mexico.
The suspect, 23-year-old Ryan Martinez, was arrested after the shooting and allegedly had worn a MAGA hat earlier.
Oñate's legacy is controversial due to his violent treatment of indigenous people during Spain's colonization.
The rededication ceremony for the statue was postponed over safety concerns but protesters still gathered.
This follows a similar shooting at an Oñate statue protest in New Mexico in 2020 amid racial justice demonstrations.
