Man Rescued After Getting Stuck Under Train Armrest Searching for AirPod

Firefighters spent 90 minutes using hydraulic tools to free the man, whose arm became trapped and swollen on a German train.

When the fire department arrived on scene, the situation was such that a man on a Westfalenbahn train traveling toward Braunschweig had his hand trapped under an armrest, behind the seat, in the side panel, and was unable to free himself. This was triggered by his AirPods, which had fallen off and slipped into a gap in the side panel. What initially appeared to be a relatively simple rescue, however, developed into a complex rescue operation, as the person's hand had become so swollen that it could no longer be freed using simple rescue equipment.
A rescue blanket was used to shield the trapped passenger from view.

Overview

  • The incident occurred on Friday evening, May 23, 2025, at Lehrte station near Hannover, Germany, on a Westfalenbahn train.
  • The man became trapped while trying to retrieve a dropped AirPod, with his arm swelling and getting stuck between the seat and the train's side panel.
  • A complex rescue operation involving 11 firefighters, two emergency vehicles, and hydraulic equipment was required to dismantle the armrest, a luggage rack, and a seat to free him.
  • Firefighters blocked onlookers' views with a gold-colored sheet after passengers attempted to film the rescue, and the platform was cordoned off during the operation.
  • Other passengers were directed to a replacement service due to delays, and the man was treated at the scene after being freed along with his AirPod.
