Man in His 60s Dies After Being Hit by Two Cars on A19 Near Sunderland

Police have opened a forensic collision inquiry, issuing a public appeal for witness and dashcam footage.

  • Emergency services were called shortly after 10:10pm on Saturday, December 20, to the southbound A19 under the A183 Chester Road overpass where a pedestrian was struck by a white Toyota Prius and a blue Volkswagen Sharan and died at the scene.
  • Northumbria Police said the drivers of both vehicles remained to assist enquiries, and next of kin for the deceased man have been informed.
  • The A19 is closed in both directions between the A690 and A183 northbound and between the A1231 and A690 southbound, with National Highways diversions in place and closures expected to continue while investigators work at the scene.

  • Separately, a three-vehicle collision late Sunday morning at Park Lea/West Park saw five patients assessed at the scene and one adult taken to Sunderland General Hospital, following an earlier two-vehicle crash near Silverlink that sent two people to NSEC.
