Man Found Dead in RV Fire at West Oakland Encampment

Authorities are investigating the cause of the early morning fire that engulfed a recreational vehicle, killing one person inside.

  • The fire occurred early Monday morning at 34th and Wood streets in West Oakland, a location with a long row of encampments near the Amtrak fence line.
  • Firefighters responded to the scene around 3:20 a.m. and found the RV fully engulfed in flames.
  • After extinguishing the fire, crews discovered the body of a deceased man inside the vehicle.
  • The Oakland Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, and an arson probe has been opened.
  • The Oakland Police homicide unit and the Alameda County Coroner’s Office are also involved in the investigation, but the victim's identity has not yet been released.
