Man Fined for Posing as Royal Navy Admiral at Llandudno Remembrance Ceremony

He admitted the Uniforms Act offence, having told police he wore a tailored cadet uniform with medals purchased online.

Overview

  • Jonathan Carley, 65, pleaded guilty at Llandudno Magistrates' Court and was fined £500 plus £85 costs and a £200 surcharge.
  • He wore a Royal Navy-style admiral uniform at the 9 November 2025 service, presented himself as a Rear Admiral, and claimed to represent the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, who had not authorised him.
  • District Judge Gwyn Jones said Carley intended to deceive and that his conduct caused a great deal of pain to service families.
  • Prosecutors said his display included the Distinguished Service Order, the Queen Victoria Medal, a NATO decoration, and operational medals for Iraq and Syria.
  • Images circulating online prompted reports to police; the Walter Mitty Hunters Club flagged inconsistencies, and Carley was arrested on 14 November, telling officers, "I've been expecting you."
