Overview
- The shooting occurred around 12:21 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, on the northbound E platform at the 53rd Street–Seventh Avenue station and the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
- NYPD detectives say the gunfire followed an argument that moved between a train and the platform and they have characterized the attack as not random.
- Police released surveillance images and described the suspect as a man in a red tracksuit, black vest, black face mask and carrying a backpack, and no arrests have been reported as the department conducts an active manhunt.
- The MTA rerouted uptown C, D and E trains and kept service changes in effect while Midtown North Precinct and Transit District 1 officers processed the crime scene and reviewed video footage.
- The killing is the seventh transit homicide reported this year, a rise from four over the same period last year, and the incident has renewed commuter concern about subway safety and calls for stronger enforcement and security measures.
