Overview

  • A masked man allegedly threatened a staff member with a large knife at a Devonshire Street grocery about 8pm and stole the cash register before fleeing with a woman.
  • Officers traced the pair to a Belvoir Street unit about 9:10pm, where the man ran toward a balcony, fell five storeys, received first aid and later died at St Vincent’s Hospital.
  • He has not been formally identified but is believed to be in his 40s, and Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner said both people were known to police.
  • The 21-year-old woman, identified in court as Tiahna Hatch, was arrested at the unit; a dangerous-weapon charge was withdrawn and replaced with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, and she was granted conditional bail.
  • A crime scene was declared and an Inner West Police Area Command critical incident team is investigating, as CCTV obtained by 7NEWS appears to show the alleged robbery.
