Overview

  • A 35-year-old civilian ran onto an active taxiway at Milan Bérgamo–Orio al Serio Airport on July 8 and was sucked into the right engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 during its pushback.
  • The victim, who was neither a passenger nor airport staff, was killed instantly and authorities are examining whether his intrusion was intentional.
  • Flight operations were halted from 10:20 to 12:00 local time, causing diversions to Bologna, Verona and Milan Malpensa and a rebooking of 154 passengers onto a 15:55 departure.
  • Volotea confirmed that all six crew members and 154 passengers were unharmed, offered psychological support and is cooperating with the ongoing investigations.
  • Italian police, Sacbo and European aviation regulators have launched joint probes into runway security breaches and ground-operation safety measures.
