Overview
- Emergency services were called to Camber Sands after three people got into difficulty and a large search operation recovered a 24-year-old who was later pronounced dead.
- Two others who entered the water, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, safely exited the sea.
- HM Coastguard logged the incident at 18:37 and deployed a search-and-rescue helicopter alongside the Pett Level lifeboat, local coastguard teams, Sussex Police and ambulance crews.
- Sussex Police said the man’s next of kin have been informed and that enquiries remain ongoing with an increased emergency presence at the beach.
- Charities and national forecasters warned that the current heatwave, with temperatures forecast near 36C, raises risks for people cooling off in seas, rivers and canals and is likely to prompt renewed safety messaging.
