Man Dies After Being Found Unresponsive in Charing Cross Custody

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is carrying out an independent inquiry after the Met’s professional standards team made a mandatory referral.

Overview

  • The man was arrested for recall to prison and taken to Charing Cross custody suite on Thursday 1 October, where staff say a standard risk assessment was completed on arrival.
  • Officers doing cell checks found him unresponsive shortly before 4.30am on Friday 2 October, gave first aid and called the London Ambulance Service, which took him to hospital.
  • He died in hospital on Sunday 11 October and has not been publicly named.
  • The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards informed the IOPC after the initial incident and the IOPC is now conducting an independent investigation with the Met pledging full cooperation and issuing condolences.
  • The case is drawing heightened public scrutiny because a 2025 BBC Panorama probe led to misconduct dismissals and a custody-team restructure at Charing Cross, and the IOPC findings could prompt changes to how detainees are held and medically assessed.
