Overview
- On June 24, 2022, Gregory Twigg landed three powerful punches on medically retired veteran Lee Woodward in Stoke-on-Trent, causing a subdural haematoma.
- Woodward never regained consciousness and died in hospital on April 26, 2023, after complications including peritonitis and pneumonia linked to his brain injury.
- Twigg had pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent in September 2022 and received an eight-year-and-three-month sentence before being charged with murder following Woodward’s death.
- During the five-day trial at Stafford Crown Court, Twigg argued he only meant to give a black eye and acted in fear, but jurors sided with prosecutors who cited CCTV and expert testimony to prove his intent to inflict serious harm.
- Under English law, murder carries a mandatory life sentence and Judge Roger Thomas KC will determine Twigg’s minimum term on September 19, 2025.
