Man Charged With Murder Over Grangetown House Fire

Prosecutors say there is sufficient evidence to bring charges as police continue forensic work and public appeals for information.

Overview

  • A house fire on 26 August at a property on Birchington Avenue in Grangetown killed seven-year-old Valentina Foster and her aunt Natalie McDonald and left four other people injured.
  • On 1 September Cleveland Police charged 23-year-old Jaden Wright with two counts of murder, two counts of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of attempted section 18 GBH and remanded him to appear at Teesside Crown Court.
  • CPS North East said prosecutors worked closely with police and judged there was sufficient evidence to proceed while investigators continue forensic examinations and ask the public to submit tips via the Major Incident Public Portal.
  • Two people remain in hospital with serious injuries, two teenage girls have been discharged, and a separate 31-year-old who was earlier arrested has been released without charge.
  • Local tributes have grown at the scene and police say the blaze is not being treated as linked to the recent A66 collision even as the wider area remains on alert after other violent incidents.
