Man Charged With Murder in Fatal Stabbing at CTA’s Clark/Lake Station

Federal regulators have ordered a tougher CTA safety plan within 90 days under threat of cutting funds.

Overview

  • Chicago police said Demetrius Thurman, 40, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing of a 37-year-old on a Blue Line train just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
  • The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and died, and the Cook County medical examiner had not released his identity as of Tuesday morning.
  • Thurman was arrested Sunday in the West Loop near Canal and Adams streets by the Citywide Robbery Task Force and has a detention hearing scheduled Tuesday.
  • The case is the second recent murder charge tied to CTA attacks in the Loop, following charges against Pedro Villarreal in a Dec. 23 Pink Line shooting that killed Raymond S. Harrison Jr. and wounded another rider.
  • The Federal Transit Administration rejected CTA’s safety plan, citing missing assault-reduction targets and insufficient security increases, and warned it could withhold 25% of operating funds without an approved revision.
