Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Shots Fired at Chicago Police During Jefferson Park Pursuit

Prosecutors say he was on electronic monitoring from an earlier case when the stolen Jeep pursuit began with gunfire.

Overview

  • Chicago police identified the suspect as Isaiah Martinez and announced multiple felony counts, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, armed violence, aggravated battery to a peace officer, unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, and aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle.
  • Prosecutors said a sergeant spotted a stolen 2018 Jeep at a McDonald’s drive-thru, the driver rammed a marked squad car, then fired repeatedly from the moving vehicle, striking a police car during the chase.
  • Investigators recovered a .45-caliber pistol from the Jeep with its slide locked back and found nine spent shell casings, as well as bullet damage to a garden apartment and a parked car along Montrose Avenue.
  • No injuries were reported and officers did not return fire; the driver fled on foot after a second crash and was taken into custody in the 6100-block of West Eastwood Avenue where a firearm was recovered.
  • A judge ordered the defendant detained as a public safety risk, and prosecutors noted he was on pretrial electronic monitoring in a separate case at the time of the incident.
