Man Charged With Aiming Laser at Marine One With Trump On Board

Prosecutors say the beam risked pilot disorientation during low-level flight over central Washington.

Overview

  • A criminal complaint signed Monday by Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui names Jacob Samuel Winkler, who was arrested near Constitution Avenue as Marine One departed the White House.
  • Secret Service Officer Diego Santiago says he saw a shirtless man, shined a flashlight to identify him, then was briefly disoriented when the man hit his eyes with a red laser before pointing it at the helicopter.
  • The filing describes a risk of flash blindness and an airborne collision during low-altitude operations near other helicopters and the Washington Monument.
  • After being handcuffed, the suspect repeatedly apologized in reference to the president, later admitted pointing the laser, said he did not know it was illegal, and was found carrying a three-inch fixed-blade knife.
  • The felony charge carries up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine; records do not list the suspect’s age, hometown, attorney, or whether anyone on the aircraft noticed the laser.
