Overview
- Police say the alleged assault occurred on Sunday 1 November when two males attended a property on Scorpio Street in Torquay and a 60-year-old One Nation volunteer was allegedly struck with a baseball bat.
- A 37-year-old man from Hampton Park was arrested, charged with intentionally causing injury and other assault offences, and remanded to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 10 November.
- The volunteer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening but serious injuries, and Victoria Police say the 14-year-old boy arrested at the scene was issued with a caution.
- One Nation Victoria leader Warren Pickering and Premier Ben Carroll publicly condemned the attack, and One Nation says the incident began after its election signs were allegedly interfered with.
- Police and the Victorian Electoral Commission are reported to be coordinating extra protections for volunteers after the incident, which came the same day Meaghers Hotel in Ballarat East was spray-painted with anti-One Nation slogans.
