• Emergency services responded to a park on Francis Street in Strathfield just after 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, where a 71-year-old woman was found with significant injuries.
• Paramedics treated the woman at the scene before transporting her to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
• Police allege the assailant punched the woman in the head while she was with her six-year-old grandson, then left the scene.
• Detectives arrested a 52-year-old man at a Strathfield home at about 8:30 a.m. Friday and took him to Auburn police station.
• He was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault, refused bail, and was scheduled to appear at Burwood Local Court the same day.
