Man Charged Over Alleged Nazi Tattoo at Newcastle’s Bar Beach

NSW law bans public display of Nazi symbols, a prohibition legal experts say extends to visible tattoos.

Overview

  • Police arrested a 36-year-old at a home in Urunga on Saturday evening and charged him with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public.
  • The charge follows reports that a man at Bar Beach on Christmas Eve displayed an SS Schutzstaffel tattoo, which a beachgoer photographed and reported to Crime Stoppers.
  • NSW Police said the Newcastle City Police District worked with Operation Shelter on the investigation.
  • NSW has outlawed public display of Nazi symbols since 2022, and legal experts note the ban can cover visible tattoos under Section 93Z’s definition of a public act.
  • The man was granted strict conditional bail and is due at Newcastle Local Court on January 22, 2026.
