Man Charged in UC Berkeley Sorority Break-Ins After License-Plate Leads

Authorities filed charges after surveillance helped identify the suspect.

Overview

  • Police say the intruder entered bedrooms between about 3:00 and 6:35 a.m. on Nov. 1, stole underwear and food, and watched residents shower.
  • Detectives used security footage and automatic license plate data to identify 45-year-old Courtney Alford and arrested him Nov. 5 in Castro Valley.
  • A search of his Dublin home turned up assault-rifle parts, high-capacity magazines, and more than 900 rounds of ammunition, according to police.
  • Alameda County prosecutors filed counts including burglary, peeking, invasion of privacy, unlawful entry, and firearm felonies; he pleaded not guilty and is held at Santa Rita Jail on $275,000 bail with a Nov. 18 court date.
  • Police and court records describe Alford as a convicted felon with prior cases, including a 2024 lewd-acts charge, and UC Berkeley says student-affairs staff are supporting affected residents.
