Man Charged in 1986 Murder of Nunavut Girl Previously Served Time for Two Other Killings
Jopey Atsiqtaq, arrested at an Ottawa halfway house, faces new charges decades after initial investigation.
- Jopey Atsiqtaq, who was on parole, has been charged with the 1986 second-degree murder of 15-year-old Mary Ann Birmingham in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
- Atsiqtaq had previously served a 25-year life sentence for the murders of two other individuals in the 1980s in the same area.
- Birmingham was found brutally murdered in her home while her family was out of town, and her sister discovered the body upon returning from a trip.
- In a 1990 preliminary hearing, a judge ruled there wasn't enough evidence to try Atsiqtaq for Birmingham's murder at that time.
- Atsiqtaq was arrested at a halfway house in Ottawa and is scheduled to appear in court again on October 29.
