• George Legere, 77, was found unresponsive in his cell at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution on Friday night and was pronounced dead early Saturday at a local hospital.
• The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said the cause of death is pending further study as the Connecticut Department of Correction and State Police investigate.
• Legere was arrested on Sept. 24 in the 1973 stabbing death of 21-year-old Janet Couture in East Hartford after he confessed, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
• Investigators said his confession followed information from another inmate who reported a signed statement Legere wrote in July with instructions to reveal it after his death.
• At the time of his death, Legere was serving a 25-year sentence in a separate 1984 kidnapping and sexual-assault cold case and had a lengthy criminal history.
