Man Charged After Road-Rage Shooting Near Stockton University That Triggered Lockdown

Police report the victim is a woman in stable condition who did not know the suspect.

  • Ernest Heinz, 46, of Port Republic, was charged with first-degree attempted homicide, aggravated assault and weapons offenses after his Thursday arrest, police said.

  • The victim, a woman shot in the face, was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City and was listed as stable, according to police.
  • Stockton issued a shelter-in-place at 1:19 p.m., lifted it around 4 p.m., and canceled classes for the day as officers searched for a suspect initially described in a white Honda CR-V.
  • Heinz was taken into custody at a home in Galloway Township after allegedly fleeing through campus, and police asked anyone with information to call 609-652-3705.
