Man Charged After Caravan With Three Children Crashes on Gold Coast

Police say the accused is known to the children’s mother, with charges laid over the alleged towing and crash.

Overview

  • Queensland Police allege a 59-year-old man attached a 1.5-tonne caravan to his Nissan X‑Trail with a single ratchet strap at a Tallai property about 5:30pm.
  • The caravan, containing children aged two, five and seven, picked up speed downhill, overtook the towing vehicle and crashed into a ditch roughly 80 metres from the driveway.
  • The children’s mother climbed onto the wrecked caravan and pulled them out through a skylight, and all three were assessed as uninjured.
  • A rottweiler that had been beneath the caravan suffered leg and head injuries as the van was moved, according to police.
  • After a precautionary hospital check, the man was taken to Broadbeach Police Station and charged with unlawful use and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, with a Southport Magistrates Court appearance pending.
