Overview

• The wife was allegedly locked in a room without food or water for two days and subjected to electric shocks, chilli powder applied to her private parts and hot iron burns on June 13 in Muzaffarpur.
• Her brother rescued her on June 15 and she was initially treated at Paroo Primary Health Centre before being referred to Shree Krishna Medical College and Hospital for severe injuries.
• On June 16 she filed an FIR at Deoria police station naming her husband Shatrughan Rai along with mother-in-law Dukhni Devi, brother-in-law Sumesh Rai and sister-in-law Pushpa Devi.
• Police arrested Shatrughan Rai on June 17 and have registered domestic violence and assault charges as they conduct raids to apprehend the three absconding in-laws.
• The victim, who has been married for ten years and has three children, said the abuse began earlier this year after her family accused her of infidelity and police have promised her full support.
