Man Arrested After Reported Rape on Brighton Beach

Police have sealed part of the seafront in a rapid inquiry that follows two other recent charges in the city.

Overview

  • A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of raping a woman in her 20s and remains in custody after the victim reported the attack overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday.
  • Officers cordoned the beach between the i360 tower and the volleyball courts and carried out an evidence search while specialist trained officers support the victim.
  • Sussex Police have asked anyone with information to contact them online or by calling 101 and to quote serial 228 of 05/08 for the beach inquiry.
  • Separately, Akiyas Jameldeen, 51, was charged with two counts of oral rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration over an incident near Black Rock car park on Madeira Drive and was remanded in custody.
  • A earlier case from late July saw 37-year-old Hany Mohamed charged with rape and common assault and remanded ahead of a September hearing, and local concern has been amplified by a recent unrelated gang-rape sentencing on the same seafront.
