Man Accused in UC Berkeley Sorority Break-Ins Charged and Held on $275,000 Bail

He remains in Santa Rita Jail pending a Nov. 18 court date after prosecutors filed burglary, privacy and firearm counts.

Overview

  • Police say a 45-year-old Dublin man repeatedly entered an off-campus sorority between about 3 a.m. and 6:35 a.m. on Nov. 1, watched residents in a communal shower, and stole underwear and food.
  • Security footage showed the intruder coming and going several times, at one point in a ski mask, and entering bedrooms at the Alpha Chi Omega house on the 2300 block of Warring Street.
  • Detectives used surveillance images and FLOCK license-plate reader data to identify the suspect’s vehicle, arresting Courtney Alford on Nov. 5 in Castro Valley.
  • A search of Alford’s Dublin home recovered assault-rifle parts, several high-capacity magazines and more than 900 rounds of ammunition, according to Berkeley police.
  • The Alameda County District Attorney charged Alford with burglary, peeking/invasion of privacy, unlawful entry and felon-in-possession counts; he pleaded not guilty, and at least three victims are working with investigators as the wider sorority community receives support.
