Mamdani Restores Full McGuinness Blvd. Redesign With Parking-Protected Bike Lanes

City crews will start when dry, above-40-degree weather permits.

Overview

  • The plan reinstates the original road diet with one motor-vehicle lane, one parking-protected bike lane, and one parking/loading lane in each direction, extending protection up to the Pulaski Bridge.
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said installation will begin as soon as pavement is dry and temperatures are above roughly 40 degrees.
  • The decision follows a prior scale-back under former Mayor Eric Adams after opposition, as prosecutors later alleged a bribery scheme involving ex–Adams aide Ingrid Lewis-Martin and Broadway Stages owners; all have pleaded not guilty and the case is ongoing.
  • Officials point to safety data showing the southern stretch recorded one death and more than 150 traffic injuries from January through July 2024.
  • Advocates praised the move, which fulfills a campaign pledge, and DOT notes similar protected-lane road diets have reduced serious crashes by about 30 percent citywide.
