Overview
- City Hall confirmed Thursday that Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pulled funding and will not move forward with the proposed Public Safety Academy next to the NYPD training campus in College Point, Queens.
- The consolidated training plan dates to 2017 under Bill de Blasio and was expanded under Eric Adams into a roughly $200–225 million facility meant to train corrections, police and other city enforcement units.
- Mamdani repeatedly campaigned against spending more than $200 million on the project and said during his 2024 run that the money could be put to better use, a promise he has now fulfilled by canceling the plan.
- Republican leaders and some City Council members warned the cancellation will hurt recruitment, retention and hundreds of local jobs and could complicate standardized training across agencies.
- The move raises practical questions about where the city will house and coordinate interagency training going forward and adds to debate over Mamdani’s relationship with policing institutions as he has largely kept Adams-era public-safety leadership in place.
