Mama June Granted Temporary Custody of Granddaughter Kaitlyn

Custody battle ensues between June Shannon and Michael Cardwell, the ex-husband of her late daughter, over 11-year-old Kaitlyn.

June “Mama June” Shannon has been granted temporary custody of her 11-year-old granddaughter, Kaitlyn, over the ex-husband of her late daughter, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell.
Michael Cardwell, Anna's ex-husband, is not the biological father of Kaitlyn, but shared a daughter with Anna and has been seeking custody of Kaitlyn.
Shannon filed for custody after Michael Cardwell filed a petition for custody. She argued that Kaitlyn has been living with her for over a month and it would be in the child's best interest to continue residing with her.
Michael Cardwell argued that he has taken a 'permanent, unequivocal, committed, and responsible parental role' of Kaitlyn, despite not being her biological father.
Anna Cardwell died from cancer at the age of 29 in November. Following her death, Michael sued Shannon for custody of Kaitlyn.
