Overview
- People born on or after 1 January 2007 are prohibited from buying, possessing or using tobacco in the Maldives.
- The restriction applies to tourists, and hotels, resorts and retailers must verify ages before selling any tobacco product.
- Illegal tobacco sales to the restricted cohort can draw a 50,000-rufiyaa fine (about US$3,200), while vaping use carries a 5,000-rufiyaa penalty (about US$320).
- A separate nationwide prohibition on importing, selling, distributing, possessing and using e-cigarettes remains in force for all ages.
- The initiative was advanced by President Mohamed Muizzu, with international context noting New Zealand’s 2023 repeal of a similar law and ongoing UK legislative debate.
