Malda District Races to Shield Communities as Rs610 Crore Erosion-Abatement Plan Advances

More than 280 families have been moved to shelters with relief supplies and medical camps pending federal sign-off on a Rs1,550 crore flood management scheme.

Overview

  • Authorities have relocated over 280 families from four erosion-hit blocks after entire villages like Janjalitola and Bhasaramtola disappeared beneath shifting riverbanks.
  • Emergency embankment protection works are underway at sites including Srikantatola, Jotpatta, Kamaltipur, Parlalpur and Paschim Ratanpur to stem further erosion.
  • Relief operations have distributed more than 3,230 tarpaulins, dry rations and baby food, set up gruel kitchens, four medical camps serving 549 patients and installed 16 temporary tube wells.
  • A Rs610 crore detailed project report has been finalised to reinforce 163km of embankments, construct spurs, activate a 15km paleo channel and close the Koshi channel as part of a larger Rs1,550 crore anti-erosion project.
  • West Bengal has formally submitted the DPR to the Centre and is coordinating with Bihar and Jharkhand after the July 24 GFCC meeting, targeting a December 2025 start pending approvals.
