Overview
- The show opens Saturday, Sept. 19 with free entry and will run at Malba in Buenos Aires through March 15, 2027.
- Curator Elina Costantini assembled the exhibition over three years using major loans from Museo Frida Kahlo Casa Azul, private collectors including Gannit Ankori, and the Malba–Costantini holdings.
- The presentation centers on clothing, accessories and domestic objects and includes only two Kahlo paintings — Autorretrato con chango y loro (1942) and Diego y yo (1949) — to emphasize material life over canvases.
- A dedicated gallery displays corsets, canes and decorated orthopedic devices to foreground Kahlo’s long history of injury and disability, and curators say they followed an ethical rule not to show objects the artist never chose to display in life.
- The Buenos Aires stop marks the first time many of these Tehuana dresses and personal items travel to South America after runs at the V&A, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and a recent showing at MoMA, expanding public access and scholarship on Kahlo’s use of dress as political and bodily expression.
