Malaysia Rolls Out Targeted Budi95 Petrol Subsidy Nationwide at RM1.99 for Eligible Drivers

The scheme narrows benefits to licensed Malaysian citizens to curb leakage and reduce the subsidy bill.

Overview

  • All Malaysians with valid driving licences can now buy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre up to 300 litres a month, replacing the prior blanket ceiling.
  • The unsubsidised RON95 pump price is fixed at RM2.60 per litre throughout October before moving to weekly market-based pricing.
  • Motorists reported confusion as pumps display RM2.60 and the subsidy is applied on the receipt after fueling, with usage and remaining quota shown.
  • About 878,279 foreign nationals with Malaysian licences are excluded from the subsidy, which officials say supports annual savings in the billions of ringgit.
  • A registration pathway is being built for Malaysians holding Singapore driving licences, JPJ has opened special and weekend counters to fix data issues, and details of extra quotas for e-hailing drivers are slated for finalisation this week.
