Malaysia Reopens to Brazilian Chicken, Clears Six Additional Farm Exports

Malaysia will audit 16 pork plants in November to consider further certifications.

Overview

  • Brazilian officials said Malaysia authorized imports of wild and farmed fish, sesame, egg powder, melons from Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, and apples from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
  • Chicken shipments from Brazil will resume after Malaysia suspended imports on May 16 following an avian influenza case in a commercial flock.
  • Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro said the poultry trade restarted in about three months, a process that could take up to 12 months under protocol.
  • The decisions were announced after Fávaro met Malaysia’s agriculture minister, Mohamad Sabu, during the Brazilian presidential mission in Kuala Lumpur.
  • Malaysia currently permits pork imports from two Brazilian plants, and the November audit will evaluate 16 additional facilities for potential approval.
