Malaysia Imposes RM300 Fines as VEP Enforcement Kicks In at Causeway

Authorities set up roadblocks beyond checkpoints to check RFID-based permits on Singapore cars after a nine-month warning phase

Overview

  • Ten Singapore-registered vehicles were issued RM300 fines within the first hour of enforcement at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar entry point
  • The Road Transport Department deployed 55 officers at checkpoints roughly 100 metres from the CIQ complex to intercept non-compliant vehicles
  • Motorists can settle the on-the-spot compound at mobile counters or online via MyEG or contest their summons in court where penalties can rise to RM2,000 and six months’ jail
  • As of June 29, 248,504 private Singapore cars have signed up for the VEP, but 17% of issued RFID tags remain unactivated
  • Company vehicles with pre-registered but unactivated tags receive reminder notices and are allowed to exit, while unregistered ones face the same RM300 fine
