Malaysia FA Suspends Secretary-General, Sets Up Independent Probe in Eligibility Scandal

An Oct. 30 decision on Malaysia's FIFA appeal will follow the launch of an independent inquiry.

Overview

  • FAM suspended secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman with immediate effect to enable a probe into a reported technical error in player documentation.
  • The association said a committee with no FAM members will investigate how the documents were submitted and determine accountability.
  • FAM maintains there was no forgery by the players or the institution, seeks to annul all sanctions on appeal, and may escalate to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if needed.
  • FIFA in September imposed 12-month bans on seven naturalised players and fined FAM 350,000 Swiss francs, also referring Malaysia’s team eligibility to the FIFA Football Tribunal.
  • FIFA’s report found FAM submitted forged records asserting Malaysian-born grandparents, while original certificates showed births in Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain.
