Malaysia Aviation Group Orders Mandatory Tests for 1,260 Pilots

Mandatory screening will remove any pilot who misses testing from duty until they are cleared by regulators.

Overview

  • An off-duty Malaysia Airlines second officer was detained on July 28 in Jakarta after customs found about 26 kilograms of MDMA in his checked luggage and urine tests indicated cocaine and methamphetamine use.
  • Malaysia Aviation Group has begun mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots, requiring completion by August 15 and grounding any pilot who does not complete testing until they are cleared.
  • MAG says the detained crew member was a second officer travelling in the cockpit jump seat, was off duty for two days before the flight, and was not the pilot flying the aircraft which two qualified pilots operated safely.
  • Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Authority and Indonesian law enforcement have opened parallel probes to examine how the luggage passed outbound screening at Kuala Lumpur and to investigate possible wider trafficking links.
  • MAG says the testing will complement existing random checks, will be widened to all active pilots and later cabin crew, and the group will strengthen fitness-for-duty checks and wellbeing support as it cooperates with authorities.
